Not all chatbots are created equal. There is a fundamental architectural difference between the chatbot that says "press 1 for sales, press 2 for support" and the AI assistant that actually understands your question.
Rule-Based Chatbots
Rule-based (or "decision tree") chatbots follow a predetermined script:

Where they fail: Anything outside the script. Type a question the bot was not programmed for and you get "I didn't understand. Please select from the options below."
AI Chatbots
AI chatbots understand natural language. They comprehend the question and generate an appropriate response from their knowledge base.
A visitor asks: "I need to connect 4 users and my budget is tight — what would you recommend?"
Rule-based: "I didn't understand. Please select: Pricing | Features | Support"

The difference in customer experience is categorical.
The Training Difference
Rule-based: Every conversation path must be manually written. Takes weeks, requires constant manual updating as your business changes.
